Research suggests that small steps and lifestyle changes over time have the potential to increase lifespan and quality of life. Why not start now, in Mid-life, to make the most of aging?

Eat for Age-Defying Nutrition

Eating a healthy diet that focuses on whole foods and less processed foods, such as consuming more fruits, vegetables, beans, and lean proteins, is best for the aging process.

A Study on The Effect of Nutrition on Aging—A Systematic Review Focusing on Aging-Related Biomarkers – PMC references the effects of better nutrition in reducing chronic health and age-related disease.

Move to Build Muscle

As we age, humans lose muscle mass, which can lead to loss of independence, balance, and other health problems. Studies and research indicate that increasing muscle mass as we age is preventative for many age-related health conditions and diseases.

Discover ways to exercise that fit your age and lifestyle. Make exercise and building muscle a daily practice to prevent falls and increase lifespan.

Staying Connected Builds Social Capital

Building a social network is similar to growing a bank account because deposits are needed to increase the money, whereas social connections build better aging networks. As we age without social connections, our worlds get smaller and isolation increases.

Here are ways to stay connected:

  • Join groups and volunteer
  • Connect via computers and phones
  • Keep medical appointments, seek therapy
  • Exercise
  • Take Classes
  • Adopt a pet

Remember to be vigilant about preventing scams and elder abuse, so while making social connections is critical for better aging, crime prevention and situational awareness must be part of your due diligence.

Next Steps, Where to Start

Start with small steps by defining areas where you’d like to make connections and bring new things into your life. Always check with your healthcare team. Discover my articles from my column, Ask Veronica, for ways to start building social connection.
